What is a vape starter kit?

A starter kit is the complete package needed to begin vaping: a battery (the device), a tank or pod (the part that holds e-liquid), a coil (or two), a USB charging cable and usually a manual. E-liquid is bought separately. UK starter kits in 2026 are mostly MTL pod kits at £15-30.

What is in the box

Most starter kits include the same set of components, regardless of brand. Here is what to expect when you unbox a typical UK kit.

The device (battery and chipset): The main body. Contains the battery, fire button or auto-draw sensor, and electronics. Usually has a USB-C charging port.
The pod or tank: The part that holds e-liquid and contains the coil. Pods are sealed units. Tanks are screw-on glass-and-metal containers.
The coil(s): The heating element with cotton wick. Most kits include one pre-installed plus one or two spares.
USB-C charging cable: Usually a short USB-C to USB-A. Newer kits may include USB-C to USB-C.
Manual: A small leaflet with basic instructions, safety info and warranty details.

What is NOT in the box

A few things you will need that starter kits do not usually include. Plan to budget for these separately.

E-liquid

Almost no UK starter kits include e-liquid (the disposable kit ban removed pre-filled disposable starter kits from sale in June 2025). Budget £4-6 per 10ml bottle.

USB-A wall plug

The cable usually plugs into a USB-A port on a wall plug, laptop or power bank. The wall plug itself is rarely included. Any standard USB phone charger works.

Extra pods or tanks

Pods and tanks last months to years but if yours breaks, replacements are sold separately. Typically £3-6.

Replacement coils after the first few

The included coils last 2-3 weeks. After that you buy a pack of replacements. Typically £8-15 for a pack of 3-5 coils.

Carry case

Not generally included. Useful for protection and discretion. Vape shops sell branded cases for £5-15.

External battery charger (mods with removable batteries)

For mods that use 18650 or 21700 cells. Recommended for safe charging. £15-25 for a quality charger like the Nitecore i2 or Xtar VC2.

Types of starter kit

UK starter kits in 2026 come in several formats. The right one depends on what you want from vaping.

Pre-filled pod kits

Pods come pre-filled with e-liquid. Pop in, vape, replace when empty. Easiest option. £8-15 per pod. Examples: Elf Bar AF5000, Lost Mary BM6000.

Refillable pod kits

Empty pods you fill yourself. Cheaper long-term. The current UK standard for most users. £15-30 for the kit. Examples: Vaporesso XROS 3, Caliburn G2, Oxva Xlim Pro.

Tank kits

Refillable tanks (usually 2ml in the UK), screw-on coils, more flexibility. Examples: Innokin Zenith II, Aspire BP60. £25-50.

Sub-ohm starter kits

Higher-powered kits for cloud chasing. Box mods with sub-ohm tanks. £40-80. Examples: Voopoo Drag X Plus, Geekvape T200.

What to look for in your first starter kit

The right kit depends on your vaping style, your budget and how much you want to learn upfront.

Decide MTL or DTL

Set a realistic budget
£15-30 buys a good MTL pod kit. £40+ buys a sub-ohm starter. Add £10-15 for the first few weeks of e-liquid.
Check coil availability
Ask the shop how easy replacement coils are to find. Stick to mainstream brands (Vaporesso, Voopoo, Innokin, Smok, GeekVape, Aspire, Oxva, Uwell). Coils for these are sold everywhere.
Choose a known brand
Counterfeit kits are common. Buy from a proper UK vape shop, not from generic marketplace listings. Reputable brands have warranties and customer support.
Consider USB-C charging
USB-C has become the standard. Older kits may still use micro-USB. USB-C is more durable and you probably already have cables.
Check battery capacity
For pod kits, look for 800mAh or higher. This gives a full day of moderate use. Lower capacity means charging multiple times daily.

Convenience stores and supermarkets

Avoid

Generic marketplaces with unverified sellers. Counterfeit kits are common. Devices with fake or removed CE marks are unsafe.

Common starter kit mistakes

Buying a sub-ohm kit as a first vape. Wrong nicotine strength, harder to use, more expensive to run. Start with MTL.
Buying the cheapest possible kit. Counterfeit risk is highest at the bottom end. Spend at least £15-20 from a reputable brand.
Forgetting to buy e-liquid. UK starter kits in 2026 do not include liquid. Add a couple of 10ml bottles to your first purchase.
Wrong nicotine strength. Heavy ex-smokers should start at 20mg nic salts MTL. Lighter smokers at 10mg. Going too low at first leads to chain vaping.
