How they work

The setup has two main parts: the device (battery and electronics) and the pod (sealed e-liquid container with built-in coil). The device is reusable for the life of the battery. The pod is single-use but only the pod, not the whole device.

1. Buy the device and a pod

   Many kits include one or two pods. If not, buy a pod separately. Pods are sold individually or in multi-packs.

2. Click the pod into the device

   Most use magnetic or click-in connections. No screwing, no refilling, no priming. The pod is fully sealed.

3. Charge if needed

   Standard USB-C charging. Most kits arrive partially charged.

4. Use until the pod is empty

   A typical 2ml pod lasts 600-1000 puffs. Larger 3-4ml prefilled pods last 1500-2000+ puffs (the disposable-style replacement market).

5. Replace the pod

   Pop the empty pod off and put a fresh one on. Same device, new flavour or strength if you want.

The big convenience win: you do not refill e-liquid yourself, you do not replace coils, and you do not have to clean tanks. Same as a disposable but with a reusable battery and replaceable pods.

Why they replaced disposables

The UK ban on disposable vapes took effect on 1 June 2025. Disposable vapes can no longer be sold by UK retailers. Prefilled pod kits became the legal alternative.

• Environmental: Disposable vapes contained a single-use lithium battery thrown away after one tank. Around 8 disposables per second were being binned in the UK in 2024. Prefilled pod kits keep the battery for 12-18 months.
• Cost: A disposable cost £5-7 for around 600-800 puffs. A prefilled pod costs £4-8 for the same or more puffs, plus a one-off £8-15 device cost. After 2-3 pods, it works out cheaper.
• Convenience preserved: Prefilled pod kits feel and operate like disposables. No refilling, no coil replacement, no priming.
• Range: Same flavours, same nicotine strengths (up to 20mg in the UK). Same brands have switched their disposable lines to pod kits.

2. Match nicotine strength to your needs

   Most prefilled pods come in 10mg or 20mg nicotine. Heavier ex-smokers usually need 20mg. Lighter users 10mg.

3. Pick flavours from the available range

   Prefilled pods restrict you to whatever the brand offers. Common flavours: fruits, menthol, tobacco, sweet/dessert. If you want something specific, check before buying the device.

4. Check pod capacity (and puff count claims)

   UK legal limit is 2ml per pod. Some “disposable replacement” kits offer larger 3-4ml pods with higher puff counts but these need careful checking against UK regulations.
