A vape mod is the powered body of a vape kit, where the battery and controls live. The tank or pod attaches to the top. The name comes from the early days of vaping when users “modified” torches and battery tubes to power coils. Modern mods are purpose-built devices with proper chipsets and safety features.
The mod has three main jobs: hold the battery, deliver power to the coil and provide controls. Everything else (the e-liquid, the wick, the heating element) lives in the tank or pod that screws or clicks onto the top.
01
Box mods
Rectangular body, screen, adjustable wattage. The standard for sub-ohm DTL vaping. Usually 60-200W. Examples: Voopoo Drag X Plus, Geekvape Aegis Legend, Vaporesso Gen 200.
02
Pod mods
Smaller, often pen-shaped or compact rectangular bodies. Use pods rather than tanks. Common for MTL. Examples: Vaporesso XROS 3, Caliburn G2, Oxva Xlim Pro.
03
Tube mods
Cylindrical body, usually a single tube. Some are regulated, some are mech. Less common in 2026 than they were 10 years ago. Examples: Innokin Endura T18 (regulated), Smok Stick.
04
Mech mods
Mechanical, unregulated. Direct battery voltage to coil. No chipset, no safety features. For experienced users with Ohm's Law and battery safety knowledge. Examples: certain rebuildable platforms.
The single most important distinction in vape mod safety. Most UK kits sold today are regulated.
Regulated mods (safer)
Mech mods (advanced only)
If you are buying your first or second mod, stick to regulated. Mech mods are a tool for experienced rebuilders who want a specific firing curve, not a starting point. Regulated mods give you all the performance you need without battery safety hazards.
Mods either contain a sealed battery or take removable cells. Both have advantages.
Match the mod to your vaping style
MTL vaping needs 8-25W. Pod mods or low-wattage box mods are fine. DTL vaping needs 40W+. Box mods are standard.
Check the wattage range
The mod's max wattage should comfortably exceed your coil's recommended range. A 200W mod is overkill for a 0.6 ohm coil. A 60W mod is too low for a 0.15 ohm coil.
Check the battery capacity or cells
For built-in batteries, 2000mAh minimum for daily use, 3000mAh+ for heavy users. For removable cells, 21700 is the modern standard.
Look for regulated chipset
All reputable mainstream mods are regulated. Avoid anything calling itself a “mech” or “unregulated” mod unless you know exactly what you are doing.
Choose USB-C charging
USB-C has been the standard since around 2022. Avoid micro-USB unless the mod is older but otherwise excellent.
Look for safety features
Short circuit protection, over-temperature cut-off, low-voltage warning, low-resistance lock. Reputable brands include all of these.
Check connection thread (510)
Almost all modern mods use 510 connections. The exception is proprietary pod systems. Generic 510 is more flexible.
Buy from a reputable brand
Voopoo, Geekvape, Vaporesso, Smok, Innokin, Aspire, Oxva, Lost Vape are the main UK names. Avoid no-name mods from marketplace listings.
The mod is the battery and controls
It holds the battery, regulates power and provides the user interface. The tank or pod attaches via the 510 connection on top.
Stick to regulated mods
Built-in safety features, consistent power, suitable for all users. Mech mods are advanced kit, not a starting point.
Match the mod to your style
Pod mods for MTL. Box mods for DTL and sub-ohm. Battery capacity sized to your usage. Reputable brand from a proper UK retailer.
