Yes, but Australia operates the world's only fully prescription-based vape regime. Vapes are classified as therapeutic goods, not consumer products. Since 1 July 2024, only pharmacies can sell nicotine vapes. Disposables are banned. Flavours limited to mint, menthol and tobacco. UK tourists need a prescription from home to bring vape kit through customs.
Australia is the only Western democracy to classify nicotine vapes as prescription medicines rather than consumer goods. This means everything about access, sale and use works differently from the UK system.
Australian nicotine vape products are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) under the Therapeutic Goods Order TGO 110. They are treated as a smoking cessation aid, not as a recreational consumer product. This shapes everything about the system.
Australia's vape rules have changed significantly over the past five years. Understanding the timeline helps explain the current state of the market.
2021
Prescription model introduced
From 1 October 2021, Australians cannot import nicotine vapes without a valid prescription. Personal import restricted to prescription holders only.
2024
Disposable import ban and pharmacy-only retail
1 January 2024: Disposable vape imports prohibited. 1 March 2024: Wider import controls. 1 July 2024: All nicotine vape retail moves to pharmacies. 1 October 2024: Pharmacy access without prescription opens for low-strength products.
2025
TGO 110 takes effect
From 1 July 2025, TGO 110 sets maximum nicotine at 50mg/ml, restricts flavours to mint, menthol and tobacco, and prohibits single-use disposable formats.
2026
National tracking and serialisation
Federal track-and-trace serialisation rolling out for vape products with QR codes for verification. National prescription database synchronising pharmacy and customs data.
The Australian system has a specific exception for personal-use travellers but it requires paperwork. This catches many UK visitors by surprise.
Get a UK prescription before travelling
Speak to your GP or a private clinic about a nicotine vape prescription. Some UK clinics specialise in this for travellers.
Translate it if necessary
Bring the original prescription in English. Australian Border Force needs to verify the script is valid.
Stay within 3-month supply limit
The TGA Personal Importation Scheme allows up to 3 months supply at one time. Calculate your actual usage for the trip.
Bring refillable devices only
Disposables cannot be imported regardless of prescription. Refillable pod kits and sub-ohm devices are legal.
Declare at customs
Tick the relevant box on the incoming passenger card. Australian Border Force will verify your prescription.
Stick to TGO 110 flavours
Tobacco, mint or menthol flavours are accepted. Other flavours may be confiscated even with a prescription.
Travellers without a prescription cannot legally bring nicotine vapes into Australia. Border Force actively intercepts undeclared shipments and personal imports.
Australia treats vaping the same as smoking in public places. The default rule: wherever smoking is banned, vaping is banned. State and territory laws add detail.
The retail landscape changed dramatically in 2024. The result is a very narrow legal channel.
Pharmacies (the only legal channel)
Look for “Pharmacy” or “Chemist” signs. Not all pharmacies stock vape products yet. Ring ahead to check availability.
Without prescription (≤20mg/ml only)
Adults 18+ can purchase low-strength nicotine vapes (Schedule 3 pharmacist-only) by speaking to the pharmacist. Show photo ID. Limited choice of flavours and devices.
With prescription (up to 50mg/ml)
Higher strength products (Schedule 4) require a prescription from a doctor or authorised prescriber. Many telehealth services can provide same-day prescriptions for around A$45.
Avoid illicit market
Black market vapes exist but purchase is illegal. Queensland police issued on-the-spot fines of A$2,750 in 2026 for illicit vape purchases. Vendors sometimes work with police.
Online retailers (banned)
Non-pharmacy online retail of nicotine vapes is illegal. Even Australian-based online shops cannot legally sell nicotine vapes outside the pharmacy framework.
Pharmacy vape products are typically priced higher than UK pre-duty levels. A 10ml bottle of nicotine salt costs A$15 to A$25 (£8 to £13). A prescription consultation adds around A$45.
UK travellers planning to use nicotine pouches as an alternative to vapes need to know these are also tightly restricted in Australia.
Australia is the world's only prescription-based vape regime
Vapes are classified as therapeutic goods. Pharmacy-only retail since 1 July 2024. No vape shops. Tourists need a prescription to import.
Bring everything you need with a prescription
Refillable kits only, mint/menthol/tobacco flavours, up to 3 months supply. Border Force checks. Black market alternatives risky.
Indoor and outdoor restrictions are strict
Vaping banned wherever smoking is banned, plus 4-5 metre buffer zones around entrances. Hotel rooms, public transport, taxis all off-limits.
