Nic salts are designed to be smooth. When they burn your throat instead, something specific is wrong with your setup or strength. Here are the six most common causes and exactly how to fix each one.
Quick Answer: The most common reasons nic salts burn your throat are: nicotine strength too high for your tolerance, a burnt or old coil producing acrid vapour, wattage set too high for the coil, chain vaping without letting the wick refill, dehydration reducing natural throat moisture. PG sensitivity is a sixth possible cause. Each has a straightforward fix. In the majority of cases reducing the nicotine strength or replacing a worn coil resolves the issue within a single session.
One of the defining characteristics of nic salt e-liquid is a smoother throat hit than freebase nicotine at equivalent strengths. The benzoic acid in nic salts lowers the pH of the liquid, reducing the alkalinity that causes the harsh scratching sensation of high-strength freebase. If your nic salts are burning your throat, it means one or more external factors are overriding that smoothness.
The good news is that the cause is almost always identifiable and fixable. Work through the causes below systematically to diagnose what is happening with your specific setup.
This is the single most common cause of throat burn when vaping nic salts. Even though nic salts are smooth at high concentrations relative to freebase, 20mg is still a significant amount of nicotine per puff. If you are new to vaping or have recently stepped down from cigarettes, your throat may not yet be adapted to the vapour itself. Starting at 10mg rather than 20mg and allowing a week or two for your throat to adjust is the simplest fix. If 20mg is burning but you need that strength to manage cravings, try reducing your puff duration rather than the strength: shorter draws of two to three seconds rather than long five-second pulls reduce total nicotine and vapour per puff without changing the bottle.
Fix: Step down from 20mg to 10mg. If stepping down is not possible without experiencing cravings, reduce puff length instead.
A coil that is past its useful life or has accumulated sweetener residue on the wire produces a harsh, acrid vapour that burns the throat regardless of the nicotine strength or type. The tell-tale signs are a distinctly unpleasant burnt or chemical taste alongside the throat irritation, often with reduced vapour production. No amount of adjusting the strength or wattage will fix a burnt coil. It needs replacing. A coil in a pod kit typically lasts one to two weeks depending on how frequently you vape and which flavours you use. Heavily sweetened bar salts reduce coil life faster than lightly sweetened standard nic salts.
Fix: Replace the pod or coil. Prime the new coil with a few drops of e-liquid before filling and wait five minutes before vaping.
If you are using an adjustable wattage device, running the wattage above the coil's recommended range produces hotter vapour that carries more nicotine per puff and irritates the throat more aggressively. This is particularly relevant with 20mg nic salts: at the correct wattage of 10W to 15W the vapour is controlled. At 25W or above with the same coil and liquid it becomes harsh. Many automatic pod kits prevent this by setting the wattage automatically. If you have a manual device, check the coil's rated wattage range printed on the coil housing and reduce to the lower end of that range.
Fix: Reduce wattage to the lower end of the coil's rated range. For 20mg nic salts with a 1.0ohm coil, 10W to 13W is the target range.
Taking multiple puffs in rapid succession without pausing between draws has two negative effects. First, the wick does not have time to resaturate between puffs, producing a progressively drier hit that becomes harsher and risks burning the cotton. Second, the accumulated nicotine from back-to-back puffs builds rapidly in the throat and airways, causing irritation. Allowing five to ten seconds between puffs gives the wick time to refill and prevents nicotine accumulation in the upper airway.
Fix: Pause for five to ten seconds between puffs. If you are chain vaping because one puff is not satisfying cravings, consider whether your strength (10mg vs 20mg) or coil is appropriate for your needs.
PG (Propylene Glycol), which makes up 50% of standard nic salt e-liquid, is a humectant: it draws moisture from surrounding surfaces including the mucous membranes of your throat. Vaping regularly without drinking adequate water causes the throat lining to dry out progressively, increasing sensitivity to the vapour and making each puff feel harsher than it would with normal hydration. This is particularly noticeable during longer vaping sessions. Drinking water regularly throughout the day significantly reduces throat irritation from vaping.
Fix: Drink more water throughout the day. Aim for a glass of water for every significant vaping session. If you are already well-hydrated, this is not the primary cause of your throat burn.
A small number of vapers have a sensitivity to Propylene Glycol that causes persistent throat irritation regardless of nicotine strength or coil condition. If you have worked through all other causes and still experience throat burn, PG sensitivity may be the explanation. Certain flavours are also more irritating than others: citrus, cinnamon, tobacco and some menthol profiles create a stronger throat sensation than mild fruit or cream flavours. If a specific flavour is burning your throat switch to a smoother profile such as a mild berry or peach before assuming the nicotine type is the problem.
Fix: Try a different flavour profile. If throat burn persists across multiple flavours try a higher-VG e-liquid in a compatible device. Speak to your GP if the irritation is severe or persistent.
If you have very recently switched from cigarettes to vaping, temporary throat irritation in the first one to two weeks is common and does not always indicate a problem with the device or e-liquid. When you stop smoking, the cilia in your airways begin to recover and become more sensitive. The change from tobacco smoke to vapour can feel noticeably different to the throat during this adjustment period.
This initial throat sensitivity typically resolves within one to two weeks as your airways adjust to the absence of tobacco smoke. If throat irritation persists significantly beyond two weeks and does not improve with the fixes above, switching to a lower nicotine strength or consulting your GP is advisable.
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Burning throat on every puff, fresh coil | Strength too high | Step down from 20mg to 10mg |
| Burnt, chemical or acrid taste with throat burn | Old or gunked coil | Replace coil immediately |
| Gets worse during long sessions | Chain vaping or dehydration | Pause between puffs, drink water |
| Burning throat with adjustable device at higher wattage | Wattage too high | Reduce to lower end of coil's rated range |
| Burns with one flavour but not another | Flavour irritation | Switch to a milder flavour profile |
| Throat burn across all setups and flavours | PG sensitivity or strength issue | Try lower strength; see GP if persistent |

No. TRPR-compliant nic salts at appropriate strength in a correctly configured MTL pod kit should not produce a burning sensation. A slight throat hit at 20mg is normal and expected. An actual burning or painful sensation is a sign something is wrong with the strength, coil, wattage setting or flavour. Work through the six causes above to identify and fix the specific issue.
A new coil can burn if it has not been primed before first use. The dry cotton wick burns on the first draw before e-liquid has fully saturated it, producing a harsh, unpleasant hit. Add a few drops of e-liquid directly to the coil's wicking ports before filling the pod, then wait at least five minutes after filling before vaping. This fully saturates the cotton and eliminates the dry burn issue on the first puff.
Yes. Menthol and synthetic cooling agents like WS-23 and WS-3 create a strong throat sensation that some vapers interpret as burning. This is a flavour effect rather than a genuine burn: the cooling compounds trigger cold receptors in the throat that can feel sharp or intense on sensitive airways. Switching from a heavy menthol nic salt to a non-menthol fruit profile will tell you immediately whether the cooling agent was the cause of your discomfort.
