A common question among vapers switching to nic salts. The answer is not quite what most people expect: the nicotine type matters far less for coil life than the sweetener content of your e-liquid and how you use your device.
Quick Answer: Nic salts do not inherently burn coils faster than freebase e-liquid. Coil life is determined primarily by sweetener content, wattage, chain vaping habits and whether the coil is properly primed. Bar salts, which contain high sweetener concentrations to replicate disposable vape flavours, do accelerate coil gunk faster than plain nic salts or freebase e-liquid. When used correctly in a pod kit at the right wattage, standard nic salts are often gentler on coils than thick high-VG freebase liquids used in sub-ohm tanks.
A coil is a small metal heating element wrapped with cotton wicking material. Every time you vape, the coil heats the saturated cotton to vaporise the e-liquid. Over time the coil degrades in two ways: the cotton becomes burnt from excessive heat or insufficient wicking. Residue from sweeteners and flavourings builds up on the coil wire as caramelised gunk. Both produce the same outcome: a burnt taste, reduced vapour and eventually a coil that needs replacing.
The most important factors for coil life are the sweetener content of the e-liquid, the wattage setting, chain vaping habits, coil priming and keeping the tank topped up. The nicotine type (salt vs freebase) has a relatively minor effect on its own.
When comparing standard nic salts with freebase e-liquid, the nicotine type itself makes very little difference to coil longevity. What differs significantly is the device and usage context in which each format is typically used. That context does affect coil life.

In practice, nic salts used correctly in a pod kit at low wattage are often easier on coils than high-VG freebase e-liquid used in a hot sub-ohm setup. The lower operating temperature in a pod kit means sweeteners break down more slowly and residue builds up over a longer period.
If you have noticed your coils gunking up faster since switching to bar salts, the cause is the sweetener concentration rather than the nicotine type. Bar salts use double-concentrated flavourings designed to replicate the intense taste of disposable vapes. These flavouring concentrates typically contain higher levels of sweeteners and sucralose than standard nic salt e-liquids.
Sweeteners caramelise on the coil wire when heated, building up a dark, sticky residue that progressively blocks the coil mesh and reduces vapour production. The more sweetener in the e-liquid, the faster this builds. Dark, sweet or dessert-flavoured e-liquids in any format (bar salt or freebase) will reduce coil life faster than clear, lightly sweetened fruit or tobacco flavours.

Add a few drops of e-liquid directly to the cotton wicking ports on a new coil before filling your pod or tank. After filling, wait 5 to 10 minutes before vaping. Skipping this step burns the dry cotton on the first draw and permanently damages the coil, reducing its lifespan from weeks to hours.
Every coil has a wattage range printed on it. Vaping above this range causes the coil to overheat, burning cotton before the wicking can refill and accelerating sweetener breakdown. The clearest signs are a burnt or unpleasant taste even with a full pod, significantly reduced vapour production, a gurgling or spitting sound when drawing.
