VG is one of the two main base ingredients in e-liquid (the other is PG). It is a thick, slightly sweet liquid made from vegetable oils. VG produces big vapour clouds and a smooth throat hit. Sub-ohm DTL e-liquids are usually high-VG (70VG/30PG or higher). MTL e-liquids have less.
Vegetable glycerine, also called glycerol or glycerin, is a clear, odourless, slightly sweet liquid extracted from vegetable oils (commonly palm, soy or coconut). It has been used in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and medicines for over a century. The pharmaceutical grade (USP or BP grade) is the standard for e-liquid manufacturing.
01
Produces visible vapour
VG vapourises into a thick, white visible cloud. Pure VG produces enormous clouds. This is why sub-ohm DTL vapers want high-VG liquid.
02
Smooth on the throat
VG produces a smooth, soft inhale. Lower throat hit than PG. Suits vapers stepping down from cigarettes or those with throat sensitivity.
03
Slightly sweet taste
Pure VG has a mild sweet flavour of its own. This subtly affects all e-liquid flavours. Sweet desserts and fruits work especially well with high VG.
04
Thick and viscous
VG is significantly thicker than PG (around 1000x the viscosity of water). Wicks slowly. Sub-ohm coils have large wicking holes to feed thick VG liquid.
05
Dulls flavours slightly
Flavour compounds dissolve less in VG than in PG. High-VG liquids deliver slightly less crisp flavour. Manufacturers compensate with stronger flavour concentrations.
E-liquids are labelled with their VG/PG ratio. The first number is VG percentage. Higher VG means more clouds, smoother inhale and slightly less flavour intensity.
Pod kit (MTL)
50VG/50PG is the standard. Some pods accept 60VG/40PG. Avoid 70VG+ unless the pod is rated for sub-ohm.
MTL tank (above 1.0 ohm)
50VG/50PG to 60VG/40PG. Lower VG wicks faster through the smaller MTL coil wicking holes.
Sub-ohm tank (below 1.0 ohm)
70VG/30PG to 80VG/20PG. Thicker liquid suits the larger wicking holes and higher power.
High-performance sub-ohm
70VG/30PG to 100VG. Cloud chasers often use max VG for maximum visual vapour.
If you have PG sensitivity
Use 70VG/30PG or higher to minimise PG content. Some users use 100VG to eliminate PG entirely.
If you have lower throat hit preference
Higher VG produces smoother inhale. Try 70VG or above.
Visible vapour clouds come primarily from VG. Understanding why helps you choose the right e-liquid.
High-VG benefits
High-VG drawbacks
Coil life is affected more by sweeteners and dark colourants in e-liquid than by VG ratio itself. But ultra-thick max-VG liquids can cause specific issues if not paired with the right coil.
VG has a long safety history in food, cosmetics and medicine. The specific question of inhaled VG is newer and still being studied.
VG is one of the two e-liquid base ingredients
Thick, slightly sweet, smooth, vapour-producing. The cloud component of e-liquid.
Higher VG suits sub-ohm DTL
70VG/30PG or higher matches sub-ohm coils and high power. Smaller MTL coils need less VG, more PG.
Match VG to your setup
50/50 for pod kits and MTL. 70/30 for sub-ohm. Max-VG for cloud chasing or PG sensitivity.
