PG is the other main base ingredient in e-liquid (alongside VG). It is a thin, almost flavourless liquid that carries flavour compounds well and produces a strong throat hit. PG is dominant in MTL e-liquids (50PG or higher). Some people are sensitive to PG. There are alternatives.
Propylene glycol is a clear, almost odourless, slightly sweet but mostly tasteless liquid produced from petroleum or sometimes plant oils. It is one of the most widely used compounds in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and industry. The pharmaceutical grade (USP or BP grade) is the standard for e-liquid manufacturing.
01
Carries flavours brilliantly
Flavour compounds dissolve and travel well in PG. High-PG liquids deliver crisper, more defined flavour notes than high-VG. Important for MTL where flavour intensity matters.
02
Strong throat hit
PG produces a stronger throat hit than VG. The sensation that ex-smokers find satisfying. Combined with high nicotine in MTL, it matches the cigarette throat hit closely.
03
Thin and fast-wicking
PG is much less viscous than VG (around the consistency of water with a slight oily edge). Wicks fast through small wicking holes. Essential for MTL coils.
04
Less visible vapour
PG produces less visible vapour than VG. Discreet vaping setups use higher PG ratios. Sub-ohm vapers minimise PG for maximum clouds.
05
Almost flavourless on its own
Pure PG has very little taste of its own. Unlike VG's slight sweetness, PG is a neutral base that does not interfere with flavour compounds.
PG sensitivity is the most common reason vapers switch to higher-VG ratios. It is more common than VG sensitivity, though still relatively rare overall.
PG sensitivity is real but not allergic in most cases. Most reactions are irritation rather than true allergy. Some people simply tolerate PG less well than others, especially in higher ratios.
E-liquid labels show VG/PG ratios. The second number is PG percentage. Higher PG means more throat hit, more flavour, less cloud production.
PG affects how nicotine feels and how it is delivered. Worth understanding if you are adjusting your nicotine experience.
PG has decades of safety data from food, cosmetics, medicine and inhalation use (asthma inhalers contain PG). The specific question of vapourised PG is newer but well-studied relative to most consumer chemicals.
PG is the flavour and throat hit ingredient
Thin, neutral-tasting, carries flavour compounds well, produces strong throat hit. The MTL essential.
Higher PG suits MTL setups
50PG/50VG is the standard for pod kits and MTL tanks. Sub-ohm DTL uses less PG (30% or below).
PG sensitivity exists, alternatives are available
Around 5-10% of vapers experience some PG sensitivity. Switch to higher-VG ratios or max-VG liquids if symptoms appear.
