Not in the terminal. UK airports treat vaping the same as smoking: banned indoors, allowed only in designated outdoor smoking areas. After you go through security, the airside smoking areas are much harder to find and a few airports do not have any at all.
Vaping inside a UK airport terminal is banned by the airport operator's rules, not by primary legislation. Smoke-free legislation (the Health Act 2006) covers enclosed public spaces but does not technically include vaping. However, every major UK airport has chosen to apply the same policy to vaping that it applies to smoking, meaning no use anywhere inside the building.
Smoke detectors in airport toilets do not distinguish between cigarette smoke and vape vapour. If you trigger one, you can be escorted out, fined under the airport's bylaws, or denied re-entry. Some airports have refused to allow vapers to fly after they were caught vaping in terminal toilets.
The picture is consistent across UK airports:
Once you go through security, you are airside. This is the critical decision point if you want to vape during your wait.
Landside (before security)
Airside (after security)
The trend over the last decade has been to close airside smoking areas. Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester removed them years ago. If your flight is delayed and you cannot leave airside, you may have several hours without being able to vape. Worth knowing before you go.
Policies do shift, so always check the airport's website before travel. The summary below reflects current operator policies as of mid-2026.
LHR
Heathrow
Designated outdoor smoking areas landside at each terminal. No airside smoking areas. Once you pass security you cannot vape until you are out the other side.
LGW
Gatwick
Outdoor smoking shelters landside. No airside smoking areas in either terminal. Plan accordingly for long layovers.
MAN
Manchester
Outdoor designated smoking areas landside at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Airside smoking areas removed during the major refurbishment.
STN
Stansted
Outdoor smoking shelters landside. Limited airside provision at the time of writing, worth checking before travel.
LTN
Luton
Designated smoking areas landside. The newer Park Express building does not include airside smoking facilities.
BHX
Birmingham
Outdoor smoking shelters landside. Airside smoking removed several years ago. Plan to vape before going through security.
EDI
Edinburgh
Landside smoking provision near the main entrance. Airside facilities limited and subject to change.
GLA
Glasgow
Outdoor smoking areas landside. Airside provision should be checked before travel.
LBA
Leeds Bradford
Smoking shelter landside at the entrance. No airside facility. Compact airport so distances are short.
Up until the mid-2010s most major UK airports had some form of indoor smoking room airside or an outdoor courtyard. They have almost all gone now. Several reasons combined:
The practical result is that long airside waits are now nicotine-free unless you are willing to break the rules. A few airline business lounges retain dedicated smoking rooms but these are not available to most travellers.
One area people often misunderstand: the security queue. Even before you reach the actual scanners, you are inside the terminal building. Vaping is not allowed in the security queue, the scanning area, or anywhere between the entrance and the gates.
E-liquid in your liquids bag is subject to the same 100ml rule as any other liquid. Some travellers find it easier to take the device out of their bag at the same time as their liquids bag, to speed up the check. The device itself is electronic and follows the same rules as a laptop (some airports want it out of the bag, some are happy for it to stay in).
Vape before you enter the terminal
Especially if you arrive early. Most airports have a designated outdoor area within walking distance of the entrance.
Use the landside smoking area before going airside
If you have time, step outside and use the designated smoking area before going through security. Once airside, you may not be able to vape for hours.
Consider nicotine pouches as a backup
Many vapers travelling internationally carry nicotine pouches for the parts of the journey where vaping is impossible. They are discreet and TPD-compliant for UK use.
Check your airport's airside facilities
The airport's website usually lists smoking areas. Worth checking before you go, especially for older buildings or new terminals.
Do not be tempted by toilet vaping
Smoke detectors in airport toilets are sensitive. Triggering one can mean being escorted from the airport, fined or refused boarding. Genuinely not worth it.
Allow extra time for security if you have a vape
Devices and liquids may need separate inspection. Not a big delay but builds in unpredictability.
Worth flagging: single-use disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025. That covers airport shops too. You will not find Elf Bar or Lost Mary disposables at WHSmith or Boots in any UK airport.
If you are trying to buy a vape at the airport, look for:
Duty-free e-liquid is sometimes available airside but selection is limited. If you depend on a specific flavour or strength, bring it with you rather than relying on airport availability.
Inside the terminal, no vaping anywhere
Same rules as smoking. The fact that vapour does not smell of tobacco does not change the policy. Smoke detectors will catch you in the toilets.
Outdoor designated areas allow vaping
Both landside (before security) and airside (after security) where available. Landside is reliable, airside increasingly rare.
Plan around airside provision
For long waits, expect to be without your vape between security and boarding. Vape beforehand or carry nicotine pouches as backup.
