All UK nic salt bottles have childproof caps that feel difficult to open until you understand the mechanism. It is a two-step process. Once you know how it works, every bottle opens in seconds.
Quick Answer: Press the cap firmly downward with your thumb or palm, then twist it anticlockwise (to the left) at the same time. Both actions must happen simultaneously. The downward pressure disengages the inner safety mechanism and allows the cap to rotate. If you try to twist without pressing first, the cap will not move. Most UK nic salt bottles use this push-and-turn method. A small number use a squeeze-and-turn variant where you pinch opposite sides of the cap while twisting anticlockwise. Both are explained fully below.
Every nic salt e-liquid bottle sold legally in the UK must have a childproof cap under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 (TRPR). This is a regulatory requirement, not a manufacturing decision. The cap is specifically designed to require two simultaneous actions that adults can perform easily but young children cannot coordinate. It is not faulty or stuck when it does not open with a simple twist: it is working as intended.
Understanding the mechanism removes the frustration. The cap has an inner and outer layer. A safety lip on the inner cap prevents the outer cap from rotating unless downward pressure is applied to align the two layers. Once you press down and hold that pressure, the outer cap can then rotate anticlockwise to unscrew. Releasing the pressure while twisting causes the cap to spin without unscrewing, which is the most common mistake new vapers make.
This is the standard method used by the large majority of UK nic salt brands including Elfliq, IVG, Bar Juice 5000, Pod Salt and most others.
Set the bottle upright on a table or counter. Having the bottle on a stable surface gives you better control and prevents it from slipping while you apply downward pressure. Keep the bottle upright throughout the process to avoid any e-liquid leaking from the dropper nozzle tip.
Place your thumb or the heel of your palm on the top of the cap and press straight down with firm, steady pressure. You should feel the cap compress very slightly as the inner safety lip disengages. This requires more force than you might expect: press harder than feels natural. The cap is sturdy and will not crack from normal pressing force. Many people who struggle to open nic salt bottles are simply not pressing hard enough.
While holding the downward pressure, rotate the cap anticlockwise (to the left). Keep the pressure constant throughout the twist. The cap should begin rotating freely after one to two full turns. If it stops rotating, re-apply firm downward pressure and continue twisting. Once the safety mechanism fully disengages you will hear or feel a click and the cap will unscrew normally.
Once the cap has released, lift it straight up from the bottle. The fine nozzle tip of the nic salt bottle is now exposed for controlled, mess-free filling of your pod. Hold the bottle over your pod fill port and squeeze the soft plastic bottle gently to release e-liquid in a controlled stream.
A smaller number of UK nic salt bottles use a squeeze-and-turn mechanism instead of push-and-turn. Elux nic salts are the most commonly encountered example of this variant. The principle is the same: two simultaneous actions are required. Look for two raised or textured grip points on opposite sides of the cap.
Look around the sides of the cap for two slightly raised, ribbed or textured areas on opposite sides. These are the squeeze points. On some bottles they are clearly visible. On others they are subtle and require running your finger around the cap to find them. If you cannot locate them try pressing both sides of the cap at the equator and twisting: you will feel it engage when you have the right position.
Place your thumb on one grip point and your index finger on the opposite one. Pinch firmly, compressing both sides of the cap simultaneously, then twist anticlockwise while maintaining the squeeze. The cap will release after one to two turns. If nothing happens, try pressing the top of the cap down slightly while squeezing: some bottles respond to a combination of both techniques.
| Brand | Cap Type | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Elfliq (Elf Bar) | Push-and-turn | Press down firmly, twist anticlockwise |
| IVG Salts | Push-and-turn | Press down firmly, twist anticlockwise |
| Bar Juice 5000 | Push-and-turn | Press down firmly, twist anticlockwise |
| Pod Salt | Push-and-turn | Press down firmly, twist anticlockwise |
| Elux Legend Nic Salts | Squeeze-and-turn | Pinch grip points on sides, twist anticlockwise |
| Most other UK brands | Push-and-turn | Press down firmly, twist anticlockwise |
If you have applied firm downward pressure and twisted anticlockwise and the cap still will not open, the most likely cause is dried e-liquid residue around the bottle neck acting as an adhesive. This is common with partially used bottles that have been stored for some time.
Run the cap area under warm tap water for 30 seconds. The warmth softens any dried e-liquid around the threads and loosens the seal. Dry the bottle and cap thoroughly with a cloth before attempting to open again. This resolves the majority of genuinely stuck cap situations without any risk of damaging the bottle.
If the cap is slipping as you press and twist, a dry rubber glove or a piece of rubber mat over the cap dramatically increases grip and allows much more effective downward pressure and rotational force. Many vapers keep a small rubber grip pad next to their e-liquid storage for exactly this purpose.
Lightly tapping the sides of a stuck cap can help break the seal formed by dried e-liquid residue without applying excessive pressure. Tap gently on each side a few times, then attempt the push-and-turn method again immediately after. Do not strike the cap hard or use hard implements that could crack the bottle.
If you have tried warm water, rubber grip and tapping and the cap still will not move, the bottle may have a manufacturing fault with the cap mechanism. Contact the retailer you purchased it from with your receipt. UK consumer law entitles you to a replacement or refund for a product that cannot be used due to a manufacturing defect. Do not use sharp tools, pliers or excessive force as these can crack the bottle and create a spillage risk.

You are not pressing down hard enough before twisting. The safety mechanism requires firm downward pressure to disengage before the cap can rotate. If the cap spins freely without opening, stop, re-apply strong downward force with your thumb or palm and try again while maintaining that pressure throughout the twist. The cap needs to feel compressed before it will turn.
No. The fine nozzle tip on a 10ml nic salt bottle is designed for direct pod filling. You insert the tip into your pod fill port and squeeze the bottle to release e-liquid in a controlled stream. The nozzle does not need to be removed for normal pod filling. Nozzle removal is only required for shortfill bottles when adding a nic shot, which uses a different and wider bottle format.
Place the cap back on the bottle and twist clockwise until you feel and hear it click into the locked position. The childproof mechanism re-engages automatically when you tighten the cap. You do not need to press down to close the bottle, only to open it. A properly closed nic salt bottle will not spill if kept upright in storage.
