Nic salts and nic shots sound similar but they are two completely different products used in very different ways. Here is everything you need to know about what sets them apart and which one belongs in your setup.

The confusion between nic salts and nic shots is understandable because both come in small 10ml bottles and both contain nicotine. The difference lies in what they are and what you do with them.
A nic salt refers to the type of nicotine inside the bottle: nicotine that has been combined with an organic acid (usually benzoic acid) to create a smoother, faster-absorbing compound. Nic salt e-liquids arrive pre-mixed with flavouring, VG and PG in a ready-to-vape format. You fill your pod and vape. There is no mixing involved.
A nic shot (also called a nicotine booster or nicotine shot) is a plain, unflavoured bottle of concentrated nicotine solution. Its purpose is to be poured into a larger shortfill e-liquid bottle to add nicotine to what is otherwise a zero-nicotine e-liquid. Nic shots are a mixing tool, not a standalone product.

A nic shot exists because of a specific UK regulation. Under TRPR 2016, any e-liquid that contains nicotine must come in a bottle no larger than 10ml. This creates a problem for vapers who want larger volumes of their favourite flavours. Shortfill e-liquids solve it by selling the flavoured e-liquid in large bottles (50ml or 100ml) with zero nicotine, leaving space in the bottle for the buyer to add nicotine separately.
That separate nicotine is the nic shot. A standard nic shot is 10ml of unflavoured nicotine at 18mg. When added to a 50ml shortfill bottle (which has space left at the top), it dilutes to create 60ml of e-liquid at approximately 3mg. Two shots create 70ml at approximately 5mg to 6mg.
The process: squeeze the nic shot into the shortfill, replace the cap and shake hard for at least 60 seconds. The result can be vaped immediately but leaving it to steep for a few hours improves flavour consistency.

Nic shots are typically unflavoured and at 18mg, which in a pod kit would be a very high concentration without the dilution that adding it to a shortfill provides. A plain 18mg freebase nic shot would also produce a harsh throat hit. If you want a flavourless nic salt vape, look for a dedicated nic salt shot designed for standalone use rather than a standard freebase nic shot.
