A handful of side effects are very common in the first few weeks after switching from cigarettes. Most are mild, most are temporary and most have a simple fix. This is what to expect and what to do.
Some come from quitting cigarettes. Some come from vaping itself. Some come from both. Understanding which is which makes them easier to handle.
Listed from most to least common, with how long each tends to last and what to do.
Most side effects follow a similar pattern. Worst in the first few days, easing over the first month, gone by week 4 for most people.
Days 1 to 3
Peak discomfort
Cravings, irritability and headaches at their strongest. Cough may start to ramp up.
Week 1
Starting to settle
Cravings space out. Mood improves. Cough may still be active as your lungs clear.
Weeks 2 to 4
Most things resolve
Cough settles. Sleep normalises. Energy and concentration improve. Appetite stabilises.
Beyond 4 weeks
Anything still going needs attention
Side effects that have not cleared by week 4 are worth investigating. Speak to your GP or come and chat to us about setup.
Most side effects can be prevented or shortened by setting up properly from day one.
Match your nicotine strength to your smoking habit
20+ a day smoker, start at 20mg nic salts. 10 a day, 10mg is usually enough. 5 or fewer, try 6mg freebase.
Drink more water than usual
Aim for an extra 500ml a day in the first month. Solves dry mouth, headaches and helps the cough.
Avoid chain vaping
Treat your vape like a cigarette: have a session, put it down. Stacking puffs causes nicotine dizziness and dry throat.
Try MTL devices first
Mouth-to-lung pod kits and disposables feel more like smoking, deliver nicotine more efficiently and tend to suit former smokers better than sub-ohm cloud-chasing devices.
Have a plan for cravings
The vape handles most of them. For stubborn ones, gum, mints, walking and water all help. Tell people around you that you are switching.
Most side effects are nothing to worry about. Speak to your GP or use NHS 111 if any of these apply:
Most side effects are normal and temporary
Your body is clearing years of smoke damage and adjusting to nicotine being delivered differently. Discomfort in the first month is expected.
Setup matters more than willpower
Right nicotine strength, right device, plenty of water. Get these right and most side effects either do not show up or settle quickly.
Beyond 4 weeks is the line
If something is still bothering you a month in, speak to your GP. Most things will have resolved by then.
