Yes, vaping can stain teeth. The good news is that vape stains are almost always extrinsic (surface) rather than intrinsic (deep), which means they are far easier to treat than smoker stains. Where on the teeth they appear can also tell you a lot about what is causing them.
Before getting into vape specifically, it helps to understand how dentists categorise stains. The treatment is very different depending on which type you have.
Vape stains are usually extrinsic. That is the key difference from smoker stains, which become intrinsic after years of tar penetrating enamel. Vape stains stay closer to the surface, which makes them much easier to clean off.
Vape staining tends to follow predictable patterns.
01
Nicotine oxidation
Nicotine itself is colourless, but when it reacts with oxygen it produces yellow compounds that stick to enamel. The higher the nicotine, the more visible the staining over time.
02
Plaque acting as a stain magnet
Plaque is porous and absorbs colour easily. Vape residue gets trapped in plaque, which then becomes a concentrated staining source. Plaque control is therefore stain control.
03
PG and VG residue
The base liquids leave a sticky film on teeth that, while not directly coloured, traps other staining particles and bacteria. Particularly noticeable with sweet flavours.
04
Dry mouth letting stains set
Saliva normally rinses staining particles away before they bond strongly to enamel. Vape-induced dry mouth removes that protection, letting stains set in longer.
Vape stains are generally less severe and more treatable than smoker stains. The main reason is the absence of tar.
Smoker stains
Vape stains
For someone switching from smoking to vaping, the staining situation improves significantly. Old smoker stains will still need treating but new staining is much slower and milder.
Brush properly twice a day
Soft bristles, 45-degree angle to the gum line, 2 minutes. Removes nicotine residue and plaque before either has time to stain. The most important single thing.
Rinse with water after vaping
Particularly important if you cannot brush right away. Removes the sticky aerosol film before stains set in.
Floss daily
Removes plaque between teeth where staining tends to be worst. Cannot whiten what is hidden by plaque.
Get a professional dental cleaning every 6 months
The single most effective stain removal treatment for vapers. Hygienists remove extrinsic stains and tartar that brushing cannot reach. NHS cleanings cost less than most home whitening kits.
Use a whitening toothpaste 2 to 3 times a week
Hydrogen peroxide or activated charcoal types are best. Daily use can cause sensitivity. Pair with regular fluoride toothpaste on other days.
Drop your nicotine strength
Less nicotine means less staining. Going from 20mg salts to 10mg or 6mg freebase dramatically reduces ongoing stain build-up.
Consider dentist-led whitening for deeper stains
If home care has not worked after a few months, professional whitening is far more effective than over-the-counter products. UK law restricts the strongest agents to dentist supervision.
Most whitening toothpastes and strips work on extrinsic stains, which is exactly what vape staining tends to be. That means they are generally a good fit for vape staining specifically.
A few practical points:
Most vape staining is purely cosmetic. But some patterns can indicate underlying issues. See a dentist if you notice:
What looks like a stain can sometimes be early decay, enamel erosion or another problem. A dentist can identify the cause.
Yes, vaping can stain teeth
Mostly through nicotine residue and plaque accumulating on the enamel surface. The amount depends on your nicotine strength, vaping frequency and oral hygiene.
The stains are mostly removable
Vape stains are almost always extrinsic (surface) rather than intrinsic (deep). They respond well to brushing, professional cleaning and standard whitening products.
Prevention beats treatment
Rinse after vaping, brush properly, see a hygienist twice a year. Vape staining is largely preventable with consistent basic care.
