Yes, vaping can cause headaches in several different ways. The good news is most vape-related headaches have one of three causes, and the fixes are usually simple once you work out which one you are dealing with.
Vape headaches have different causes that need different fixes. Knowing which type you are getting is the first step.
01
Nicotine narrows blood vessels
Nicotine constricts blood vessels including those in the brain. The reduced blood flow can trigger a headache, similar to how too much caffeine does. Most common with high-strength nic salts.
02
PG and VG cause dehydration
Both ingredients pull moisture from your mouth, throat and over time, your body. Dehydration is one of the most reliable headache triggers there is.
03
Withdrawal between sessions
If you vape heavily, going a few hours without it triggers nicotine withdrawal. Headaches are a classic withdrawal symptom alongside irritability and difficulty concentrating.
04
PG or flavour sensitivity
About 1 to 2% of people are sensitive to PG. Symptoms include headaches, sore throat and sinus pressure. Strong flavours can also trigger migraine-prone people.
If you are not sure, the pattern usually gives it away.
The clearest diagnostic test: if your headache goes away within minutes of vaping, it is withdrawal. If it goes away after drinking water, it is dehydration. If it gets worse with vaping, it is nicotine overload.
Try these in order. Most headaches respond to one or two of them.
Drink water
A pint of water sorts a surprising number of vape headaches. Costs nothing, no side effects, and rules out dehydration as the cause.
Slow your puffing pace
Wait 30 to 60 seconds between puffs. Stop chain vaping. Lets your body process the nicotine instead of stacking it up.
Drop your nicotine strength
Going from 20mg to 10mg, or from nic salts to 6mg freebase, makes a big difference for nicotine-overload headaches. Reduces vasoconstriction without triggering withdrawal.
Take a break for an hour or two
If the headache is from too much nicotine, this lets your body clear it. If it is from withdrawal, you will know within an hour because the headache will get worse before it improves.
Switch to a higher-VG e-liquid
VG is less drying than PG. Moving from a 50/50 to a 70/30 VG/PG reduces dehydration and helps if you suspect PG sensitivity.
Eat something
Nicotine hits harder on an empty stomach. A snack or small meal slows absorption.
Track your triggers
If headaches keep happening, note when they occur, what flavour you were using and how long you had been vaping. Patterns usually become obvious within a week or two.
Most vape-related headaches are mild and clear with the steps above. Speak to your GP or call NHS 111 if any of these apply:
Headaches have many possible causes that have nothing to do with vaping. Persistent or severe headaches deserve a proper assessment.
Yes, vaping can cause headaches
Mostly through nicotine, dehydration or withdrawal between sessions. Less commonly through PG or flavour sensitivity.
The fix depends on the type
Water for dehydration. Lower nicotine for overload. Regular vaping for withdrawal. Working out which type you have makes the right fix obvious.
Persistent or severe headaches need a GP
Headaches that do not improve with the changes above, or that come with red flag symptoms, are worth investigating properly.
