Throat hit is the sensation at the back of your throat when you inhale vapour. Ex-smokers recognise it from cigarettes. It is what makes vaping feel satisfying. Too little and the vape feels weak; too much and you cough. Affected mostly by nicotine, PG content and how you draw.
Throat hit is the body's sensory response to vapour passing over the soft tissue at the back of the throat. Several compounds in vape juice produce this response, with nicotine the most significant.
The throat hit sensation is what made cigarettes physically satisfying. Smokers got used to it and many associate it with nicotine satisfaction itself. Removing throat hit makes vaping feel unsatisfying for some ex-smokers, even at the same nicotine strength.
01
Nicotine strength
Higher nicotine produces stronger throat hit. The biggest single factor. 3mg has minimal hit; 20mg can be substantial.
02
Nicotine form (freebase vs salt)
At the same strength, freebase produces stronger throat hit than salts. 20mg freebase is harsh; 20mg salts is smooth. The chemistry of pH and absorption.
03
PG ratio
More PG = more throat hit. 70PG/30VG produces stronger hit than 30PG/70VG at the same strength. PG carries nicotine to the throat more aggressively.
04
Wattage
Higher wattage produces warmer vapour, which amplifies throat hit. Lower wattage produces cooler, smoother inhale.
05
Airflow
Tight airflow concentrates vapour and intensifies throat hit. Open airflow dilutes it. MTL setups feel stronger; DTL feels softer.
06
Flavour compounds
Menthol, mint, ice, cinnamon and some tobacco flavours all add to the perceived hit. Sweet desserts and fruits feel smoother.
If your vape feels too smooth or unsatisfying, several adjustments can boost throat hit.
Increase nicotine strength
Move from 3mg to 6mg, or from 10mg to 20mg. The simplest fix. Stay within sensible ranges and the legal UK 20mg maximum.
Switch to freebase nicotine
If using 10mg salts, try 10mg freebase. Same strength but stronger throat hit. Best in MTL tank setups, not pod kits with high power.
Move to higher-PG e-liquid
From 70VG/30PG shortfill to 50VG/50PG balanced liquid. More PG = more throat hit even at the same nicotine.
Tighten airflow
Close the airflow ring partially. Concentrates vapour and intensifies the throat sensation. Useful in MTL setups.
Try menthol or mint flavours
Cooling compounds amplify the perceived throat hit. Useful for users wanting more intensity without raising nicotine.
Increase wattage slightly
Move from the low end of the coil's recommended range to the middle or top. Warmer vapour, stronger hit. Watch coil life impact.
Too much throat hit causes coughing and unpleasant sessions. Adjusting back down.
Reduce nicotine strength
Step down from 20mg to 10mg, or 6mg to 3mg. The most direct fix. Worth doing gradually over weeks rather than overnight.
Switch to salts (at moderate strengths)
10mg salt nicotine is smoother than 10mg freebase. Reduces harshness without losing the nicotine itself.
Move to higher VG
From 50VG/50PG to 70VG/30PG. Smoother inhale, less PG-driven throat sensation. Common shift for users moving from MTL to RDL.
Open airflow
More air dilutes the throat sensation. Useful for users finding tight MTL too sharp.
Avoid cooling flavours
Menthol and mint amplify hit. Move to fruit or sweet flavours for a softer inhale.
Lower wattage
Move from the top of the coil's wattage range to the middle or bottom. Cooler vapour, gentler hit.
One of the reasons MTL pod kits work as cigarette replacements is that they can match the cigarette throat hit closely. Understanding why helps.
Coughing is the body's response to irritation. Some coughing is normal when first starting; persistent coughing suggests something needs adjusting.
Different users want different levels of throat hit. The right amount depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Throat hit is the sensation that ex-smokers know
The kick at the back of the throat. Mostly from nicotine, PG and vapour temperature. What makes vaping feel like smoking.
Adjustable in multiple ways
Nicotine strength, salt vs freebase, VG/PG ratio, airflow, wattage and flavour all affect it. Tune to your preference.
Match throat hit to your stage
Strong for ex-smokers in first months. Moderate for step-down phase. Minimal for cloud chasers and 0mg vapers.
