Direct to lung (DTL) vaping draws vapour straight into the lungs in one continuous motion, similar to taking a deep breath. It uses open airflow, high-wattage sub-ohm coils and thick, high-VG e-liquid. The result: big clouds, intense flavour, fast nicotine delivery. Best for experienced vapers, not for ex-smokers in the first few months.
Unlike MTL, DTL is a single continuous motion. You do not collect vapour in your mouth first. Instead, you breathe it directly into your lungs as you would a deep yawn.
Open your throat
Relax your throat before drawing, the same way you would for a deep breath. This is the key technique difference from MTL.
Inhale steadily
Take a slow, smooth, 3-4 second pull. Vapour travels directly from the mouthpiece into the lungs without pausing.
Exhale
Breathe out through your mouth. Large vapour cloud is normal.
If MTL is like smoking a cigarette, DTL is like taking a deep, slow breath of air. Your throat and lungs should feel relaxed and open. If you cough or feel restricted, the airflow may be too tight or the nicotine too high for DTL.
DTL kit is bigger, more powerful and more expensive than MTL kit. It also requires more understanding to use safely and effectively.
What to look for in a DTL kit:
DTL needs high-VG e-liquid to function. The reasons are mechanical: sub-ohm coils have large wicking holes that thin liquid floods straight through, and the high power vapourises thick liquid efficiently.
Works well in DTL
Does not work well
DTL delivers nicotine to the bloodstream faster than MTL because vapour reaches the lungs directly and lung absorption is more efficient. The practical implication: use lower nicotine strengths.
DTL is not for everyone, especially not for new vapers transitioning from cigarettes. Here is who benefits most.
Most UK vapers start with MTL and some eventually move to DTL. The transition takes a bit of time.
Drop your nicotine strength first
Move from 20mg salts to 6mg freebase over a few weeks. Your MTL device will start to feel less satisfying which is the cue to consider DTL.
Try restricted DTL first
Some pod kits and tanks offer a restricted DTL (RDL or RDTL) mode with mid-range airflow. This sits between MTL and full DTL and helps the transition.
Buy a sub-ohm starter kit
Box mod or higher-powered pod kit with sub-ohm coils. Start at the lower end of the wattage range. Build up gradually.
Switch to high-VG shortfills
0mg shortfills are 70VG/30PG or higher. Add 1-2 nic shots to taste, keeping total strength to 3mg or 6mg.
Practice the technique
Open the airflow. Relax your throat. Inhale slowly and steadily. Coughing is normal in the first few sessions. It improves quickly.
DTL is direct lung inhalation
Vapour straight to the lungs, no mouth pause. Larger clouds, warmer vapour, intense flavour, fast nicotine delivery.
Bigger kit, more variables
Sub-ohm coils, 40-100W+ devices, high-VG e-liquid, low nicotine. More to learn than MTL but more powerful experience.
Not the right place to start
Ex-smokers should begin with MTL. Move to DTL once nicotine strength has dropped and you understand how kit and e-liquid interact.
